Course Overview

The Institute teaches Spoken English at two levels – Basic and Intermediate. The Spoken English course is designed to help the students in learning English language giving more emphasis to speaking skills. New students may choose Basic at level at the time of admission. Emphasis is placed on the development of the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills along with a knowledge of grammar. Enthusiastic participation in classroom activities is an indispensable part of the learning process. The textbook supplied by the Institute is designed for that purpose. 40% of the final evaluation is based on the student’s performance in the classroom activities.

SYLLABUS FOR INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

Speeches, Group discussion, Story telling, Description, and Conversation practice for certain situations. Reading of passages from the textbook, Letter writing and Punctuation. Parts of speech, Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Tenses, Prepositions, Adjectives, Articles, Construction of sentences, Types of sentences, Types of questions, Framing questions, Common mistakes in English.

Components of the Course

1. Oral Drilling: Involving the students in Oral Drilling of the Sentences
2. Sentence Formation Practice: Making the students give their Own Sentences/Examples and correcting them.
3. Writing Skills: Making them write their Own Sentences based on the topics of their choice. (Reporting writing, Precis writing)
4. Vocabulary: Making the students give their Own Sentences based on Specific Idioms, Phrasal Verbs and synonyms, Antonyms, Vocabulary used in competitive exams.
5. Sentence Analysis: to make the students see how the words are arranged.
6. Listening skills: Listening to the Audio Clips, watching videos and speaking about them.
7. Speaking skills: Conversations. Group Discussions, Interview Skills, Public Speaking Skills

Objectives

• To develop in the student, the ability to read texts, summarize and comprehend.
• To enable the student write emails, applications, CVs etc. to handle their professional needs.
• To enable the student, develop confidence to face interviews, answer all types of questions.
